Serger Garments - Cardigan/Casual Jacket

Fall days call for comfy casual jackets or cardigans.  And these garments are easy to make with a serger.  This 2 day class will include tips on selecting the amount of ease you want in your garment, tissue fitting and laying out and cutting the pattern pieces. And, of course, serging it together.  The Supply List includes a list of patterns appropriate for this class.  Great class for those who are new to garment sewing, serging or looking for new ways to use their serger.

Pre-requisites:    Basic knowledge of your serger, including how to thread it and being able to serge a 4 thread overlock seam, is required.  Threading and the basics of serger sewing will not be taught in this class.

Supply List:

  1. Pattern Choices:  Select your pattern based on your BUST measurement not your retail store size.

No need to cut the pattern pieces out before class.  We will discuss how much ease we want our garment to have before cutting the pattern pieces.

  • McCall’s M7476 – A dropped shoulder semi-fitted cardigan jacket. Has options for either a collarless or a shawl collar jacket.   Sizes 4/6 to 24/26.  McCall’s patterns are sold in Joann’s, Hobby Lobby and online.

  • Pamela’s Patterns New Versatile Twin Set – Fitted cardigan sweater with waist shaping and extra hip room that flatters the mature figure.  Includes adjustments for full bust.  For high bust sizes 31” to 45”.  Pattern is available at All Brands.

  • Simplicity S8992 – Fitted cardigan with options ranging from dress length to sweater length and featuring long and 3/4 length sleeves.   Sizes XXS to XXL.  Simplicity patterns are sold in Joann’s, Hobby Lobby and online.

  1. Knit fabric:  Purchase yardage based on the amount required for the size you think you will make.   Compare the fabric recommendations on the back of the pattern to the fabric bolt label to be sure you are getting the right type and weight fabric.

Please avoid 4-way or performance knit fabrics.  These can be tricky to handle.

  1. Serger in good working order.

  2. Quick Reference Guide or manual for your serger.

  3. Hem – For 8-thread sergers or coverstitch machines, the hem will put in with a coverstitch.  For 4-thread sergers the hem will be put in by topstitching the hem in place.

  • For a coverstitch hem, bring the flat sewing table (Babylock sergers) if you have an 8-thread serger.

  1. 4 spools thread - If you will make a coverstitch hem, at least two of the spools must match or coordinate with your fabric as two rows of stitches will show on the right side of the garment.

  2. Standard sewing supplies, including:

Measuring Tape

Sewing Clips or Pins

Chalk or other temporary marker

Stay Tape *

Seam/Hem Gauge

Medium Weight Fusible Interfacing

Optional:  SewKeyse Double fusible tape

(can be purchased during class at All Brands)

*  Can be Dritz® Stay Tape™ (a 1/2” wide knit tape) or Wrights® 1/4" Twill Tape.

  1. Shrink your fabric by washing and drying it.  There is nothing worse than making a garment and having it shrink in the first washing.

  2. No need to cut out your fabric ahead of class.  We will do this in the first session.

  3. Tissue fitting will be available at the start of the first class.  If you would like to be tissue fitted, wear or bring a T-shirt or similar shirt for the pattern to be fitted over.

  4. Participants must be able to thread and sew a 4-thread overlock stitch.
