Margo Handbag

Margo Handbag

Pre-Class Instructions

Completing the following steps prior to class should enable you to complete the handbag during this one-day class.

Materials:

7/8 -yard feature fabric for front pocket, bag back, handles and inside pockets

3/8-yard front of bag and pocket lining

3/8-yard bag lining

½- yard fusible foam

¾- yard medium weight fusible interfacing (single sided)

Zipper – I highly recommend a zipper By Annie, 24” length.  You cannot use a narrow zipper for this project.

Step One: Page 1 in the pattern: Cutting Guide – bring extra fabric to class

Cut fabric according to the instructions EXCEPT for Front Pocket & Handles

          Replace the 15 x 12 measurement with 16 x 13

Replace the handle measurement of 27” by 29” ONLY if you’d like a longer handle

AND, if you’d like deeper inside pockets

          Replace the 17 x 10 measurement with 17 x 12 ½

Step Two: Fusible Foam and Interfacing

If you are using fusible foam, follow these instructions:

Cut (2) 13 x 16 pieces of fusible foam

Fuse the foam to the fabric designated for the back of the bag.

Fuse the foam to the fabric designated for the front of the bag.

          NOT THE POCKET

Quilt both fused fabrics.  You may want to begin with simple channeling.  Find the center of your fused fabric.  It should be at 8”.  Draw a line from top to bottom.  Using your ruler, mark (6) 1” lines to the right of the 8” line and (6) lines to the left.

If you have a dark fabric, consider drawing your channeling lines on the white side of the foam.  Sew on the lines foam side up and the darker fabric face down.  DO NOT TRIM the foam/fabric pieces.

Handles: Cut a 1” or 1 ¼” strip of foam.  DO NOTHING with this foam strip.  We will work with it in class.

Fusible Interfacing should be of a medium weight.

Cut (2) 16 x 13 ½ pieces of fusible interfacing.

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the 14 x 17” lining fabric. DO NOT TRIM the interfacing.  We will work with it in class.

Prior to class determine what customization you might like for the inside pockets

Draw an 11” line on a piece of paper and divide into pocket widths according to your personal needs.

Step Three:  Materials for Class

Sewing machine in good working order

Zipper foot (if you have a Baby Lock and can move the needle to the left, no zipper foot is necessary)

Thread that matches your fabric (bring all extra fabric from cutting)

Bobbins wound for each color thread

Clips & Pins

Rotary Cutter

Ruler – 24” in length is good.  Also, a 3 ½” x 18” is good.

Erasable Pen

Scissors

There will be prizes for all class participants who come with the above instructions completed in entirety!
