Beginner Garment Class!



We will use Sonya Phillips, 100 Acts of Sewing – Shirt No. 1 pattern (included with the class). An easy, fun, and simple short sleeve cotton top. Easy to wear and it makes a great layering piece.

*This will be the first in a series of Beginners Garment Classes!* 

Please bring your lunch for a break in the class. 

Don't let the supply list overwhelm you - it isn't as scary as it looks!

BEFORE CLASS:
Wash and press fabric.
Have your Sewing Machine in good working order - and bring:
- It threaded w/new needle, 1 extra wound bobbin
- machine manual

Supply list: 
1. Fabric:
Washed and pressed (if needed)
Recommended: Light/medium weight cotton or natural fiber blend woven fabric
Such as - quilting cotton or light weight denim (4 oz.) (no jersey or knits, flimsy rayon and no gauze)
If choosing contrasting fabrics - be sure your thread color matches both fabrics!
Yardage needed 45” width:
- XS-L: 1½ yards
- XL-4X:1¾ yards
- 5X: 2 yards.
If desired, additional, contrasting or coordinating fabric
- ½ yd, for making bias tape
- 1/3 yd, for a contrasting bottom

Bright, bold and contrasting fabrics really make this top sing!
Add a patch pocket for bit of zip!

2. Pattern Sonya Phillips, 100 Acts of Sewing – Shirt No. 1 (included with class)
3. Thread 100% Polyester, OR what best fits your machine
4. Bias tape - purchase single fold bias tape OR prepare in class
5. Sewing machine – in good working order, extra bobbins
6. Needles for your sewing machine – size 70/10 (or 80/12) 'universal'; – depends on fabric weight
- Check that they are the correct brand for your machine
- The manual for your sewing machine
7. Seam gage
8. Measuring tape
9. Seam ripper
10. Pencil – mechanical with a click lead
11. Sewing pins (~ 1 ½” long, heat proof)
12. Scissors for paper and fabric
- Sharp! Often, fabric scissors have an edge with tooth, which hold fabric steady when cutting
13. Tailors Chalk

OPTIONAL:
- Heat/friction erasable pen – click type is the most convenient
- Thread snips (I use Gypsy brand)
- Rotary cutter (45mm) & cutting mat (at least 18x24”)
- Stiletto – I love this tool!
- Purple Thang

NOTE:
For medium top, the “finished garment measurements” are:
Bust: 43”
Hem: 45”
Length at shoulder seam: 22”
It falls ~3” below waist. (I am 5’2”)
