Supplies/Material Recommended:
sewing machine in good working order and knowledge on how to use it
usual sewing notions (scissors, snips, wonder clips, pins, etc)
-Pattern
‘The Spellbound Hat’
Available at All Brands w 15% off class discount
-3 fabrics –
Exterior – 1 yard non-directional fabric OR 1 1/2 yards directional fabric
Interior – 1 yard non-directional fabric OR 1 1/2 yards directional fabric
Bias Binding – 1 fat quarter
*make note of directional fabric, Increase yardage to 1.5 yds each interior and exterior
-Double fusible foam (like Annies Soft & Stable or Pellon).
2 pieces –
1 cone piece, 22” tall x 28” wide
1 brim piece, 25” x 25”
-Thread, this is much easier if one thread matches all fabrics
-Microtex 90/14 needle, chrome needles really do work better!
Before Class for HAT:
- The quilt sandwiches can be quilted if you have time OR just simply fused to the fabrics!
- Be sure to ‘press’ lightly and not ‘iron’
1. Construct ‘Sandwiches’
For Quilted Hat:
- Make up the 2 quilt sandwiches
- Quilt these simply! Think stripes or squares.
- These can be a patchwork quilt or a solid piece of fabric – both look great!
o Cone – 22” tall, 28” wide
o Brim – 25” square
OR For Non-Quilted Hat:
- Fuse interior and exterior fabrics to foam
- Place all 3 layers together, right side of fabric facing out with foam in middle,
- iron according to manufactures recommendations, on both sides of sandwich
2. Sew bias binding: 1 1/4” wide x ~90” long
Extras that are nice! Decorations:
- Spooky ribbon for your hat band
- Halloween themed small decorations (cats, bats, rats, goth flowers, etc.)
- Tulle
- Fake cobwebs
- I found a ‘fairy’ crown on Amazon that was super cute (just $6) for the hat brim
- You can theme it for fall, witches, ghosts, goth, steampunk, etc.
Think light weight. Decorations are mounted on the cone – not on the brim, as it will droop!
I will bring:
- A template for the hat brim and cone
- Florist wire that stabilizes the brim
